In our Advanced Composites and Technologies program, students explore the incredible strength of aerospace-grade composite materials. This particular filament-wound composite part was designed to demonstrate the concept of thick composite structures, which in aerospace applications can range from 50 to 100 plies thick. The part itself was made from surplus material that had been wound onto a roll, cut in half, and cured on a mandrel tool. Curious about its structural integrity, our students decided to put it to the test using the resources available-by driving a 2,500lb car over it! The result? Zero flex. The part remained completely intact, showcasing the remarkable strength used in high-performance industries. Understanding composites is essential for advancing manufacturing across all sectors, and our students are gaining hands-on experience with these cutting-edge materials. What should we test next?
