#rightscon #taipei_taiwan In my presentations, I explored the real-world impact of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in Kenya, highlighting both its transformative potential and the challenges it presents to rights and freedoms. One of the most significant success stories has been M-PESA, which revolutionized financial inclusion. In just a decade, Kenya's financial inclusion rate soared from 26% to 86%, enabling millions across Eastern Africa to access digital financial services. Similarly, e-government services like the E-Citizen platform have streamlined access to business registration, taxation, and payments. However, concerns about data privacy, and threats to rights and freedoms. Digital ID programs like Huduma Namba and Maisha Namba faced significant backlash due to concerns over data protection and lack of addressing historical marginalisation, and exclusion of vulnerable communities. Civil society organisations (CSOs) successfully litigated against Huduma Namba for its lack of safeguards, and similar legal challenges persist against Maisha Namba today. A legal challenge has also been mounted against WorldCoin over data protection and informed consent concerns.
