Life for a coal miner in 1900 revolved around grueling labor, dangerous conditions, and economic hardship. Miners worked long shifts, often 10-12 hours a day, in dark, narrow tunnels, using picks and shovels to extract coal. The risk of cave-ins, gas explosions, and lung diseases like black lung was ever-present, with little to no safety regulations in place. Wages were low, and many miners lived in company-owned housing and were paid in company scrip, forcing them to shop at company stores with inflated prices. Strikes and union efforts, such as those led by the United Mine Workers of America, began to emerge as miners fought for better pay, shorter hours, and safer working conditions. #history #historytok #ai #coalminer
