This piece of Byzantine-style artwork depicts Sultan Mehmet II of the Ottoman Empire appointing Gennadius II as the Archbishop of Constantinople (Head of all Greek Orthodox Christianity). This was a significant moment in Ottoman-Byzantine history as Mehmet, after conquering Constantinople, reinstated the seat of the Archbishop, showing his solidarity with the Greek Christian population of the city and his realm as a whole. This act remained an Ottoman tradition for the remaining lifeline of the empire and is still present today in modern day Turkiyë.
