When a child has an IEP with a behavior intervention plan, it’s meant to be the first step, not the backup plan. Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of calls about my child’s behavior at school—calls that feel more reactive than proactive. And while I understand how challenging behavior can be in a busy classroom, there’s already a plan in place for how to support him. So here’s what I’m asking: Before picking up the phone to call home, please revisit the behavior plan. Ask: – Were the strategies outlined in the IEP followed? – Was the support staff notified? – Did we try what we agreed to during the IEP meeting? I want to be a partner in my child’s education. But partnership means we all do our part—including implementing the tools designed to help him succeed. Our kids deserve consistency and care, not just consequences. And when the plan is followed, everyone benefits—especially the child. To other parents walking this path: Speak up. Ask questions. Request a check-in if something feels off. You are not overreacting. You are advocating.
