Internships and volunteer opportunities are so important to get hands on experience in the field! There are certain skills you’d just can’t learn in school or in a laboratory. Also, it will give you perspective of what it is like to actually be working these types of jobs! Try out a bunch of different subjects and fields! Not all jobs need scuba or snorkeling, but if you are hoping to do field work based job, getting your scuba certs and practicing your swimming/snorkeling skills will help you in the long run! Do independent research as part of thesis projects or during internships! These experience will build your scientific skills to do marine biology work. Stats and analysis is a key part to research in this field. Don’t be afraid of those maths and try to learn programs for stats and spatial analysis like R, ArcGIS, Python, and more! Surround yourself with other like minded passionate people! Gain mentorship from your supervisors and teachers in marine biology so they can share their wisdom with you.
