Example of How I Start -> I like to build an atmosphere that makes me feel something and that I can hear possibilities to continue building around. One of my favorite ways to do this is using the Folktek Resonant Garden. If you love film scores by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) you’ve heard this thing before. Making the box resonate with a tone, in this case generated by a kalimba, works really well. I like starting this way because the sound usually has a depth of feeling that doesn’t take up very much space, which makes the next series of creative decisions easier for me to make. It also provides an open ended harmonic framework so I can trick myself into feeling like I’m jamming with someone else in the room (even when most of the time it’s just the dogs). Once I patch a sound I like, I usually layer it with something else. The nice thing about the RG is it can help anything static like sustained flautando strings feel more alive (so if you’re using the same sample libraries everyone else uses and want to sound a bit out there, layering with this or a process like it can help). Ended up latching the Moog to play along with the RG drone - I liked the way the two sounds blended together. Then I decided to quickly come up with a bass line. Normally I don’t think to use the Prophet 6 for bass but it was plugged in and ready and I had an idea I wanted to get out so I went for it and now I really like Prophet 6 for bass. Something for be said for winging it and just listening / reacting - it brings some magic that wouldn’t happen otherwise. Not always, but when it does it’s the greatest.
