Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Tuesday praised the Trump administration for arresting Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate who was involved in the anti-Gaza war protests held on the campus last spring. “If you are on a student visa, and you’re in America, and you’re an aspiring young terrorist who wants to prey upon your Jewish classmates, you’re going home,” he told reporters. “We’re going to arrest your — tail, and we’re going to send you home where you belong.” Mr. Khalil, a Palestinian who grew up in Syria, was a lawful resident of the U.S. under a green card, which the Trump administration said it revoked. He has not been charged with any crimes. Tricia McLaughlin, spokesperson for the Homeland Security Department, said Mr. Khalil was arrested by ICE “in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism.” “Khalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization,” she said in a statement. “ICE and the Department of State are committed to enforcing President Trump’s executive orders and to protecting U.S. national security.” Mr. Khalil’s lawyers filed a habeas corpus petition on his behalf, challenging the validity of his arrest and detention and rejecting the characterization that his actions and speech constituted alignment with Hamas. “His speech is absolutely protected by the Constitution, and it should be chilling to everyone that the United States government could punish or try to deport someone because they disapprove of the speech they’re engaged in,” Baher Azmy, one of his lawyers, told ABC News. #speakerofthehouse #mikeiohnson #columbiauniversity #cspan
