A consensus mechanism is a way to add append blocks to the chain, while ensuring everyone agrees with the state of the ledger. The core consensus mechanism that Bitcoin employs is Proof of Work. You can think of PoW as a competition where the best computers with the highest hash rate all race each other to validate a block first. The thing they are looking for is a “Nonce” which is a variable number that matches the block’s hash and satisfies the network’s set difficulty. There are pros and cons with PoW. It is reliable, secure and fair. However, it’s expensive and energy consuming. There is another common consensus mechanism, and that is PoS We’ll cover that next.
