Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, dissected the Israeli government’s recent military escalation in Gaza, linking it to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s military, strategic, and personal agendas. Militarily, Netanyahu has repeatedly stated his intent to "end Hamas and effectively Gaza," leaving no room for surprise. Strategically, Bishara argued that the escalation aligns with proposals to displace Gaza’s population, noting, "No such transfer is possible without war." Politically, he highlighted Netanyahu’s need to "coalesce his coalition" after recent setbacks and to deflect from his ongoing corruption trial.
Bishara sharply criticised the US administration, accusing it of being "taken by its own rhetoric" and supporting Netanyahu’s "genocidal war in Gaza." He condemned the US for bypassing Congress and the UN Security Council, warning that such actions risk destabilising the region. Bishara also emphasised the growing international backlash, citing France’s condemnation of Israel’s bombardment as a violation of international law.
He underscored the shifting perceptions in the Arab world, stating, "For the absolute majority of the Arab and Muslim world, it is not Iran and Houthis that are seen primarily as an axis of evil, but rather Israel and the United States." Bishara warned that continued US and Israeli policies risk igniting upheaval, as seen in the past, and could severely undermine US interests in the region.

Gaza's fragile ceasefire has been shattered.
A wave of Israeli strikes has killed more than 410 Palestinians, many of them women and children.
It comes after Israel had blocked the entry of humanitarian aid into the strip for the past 17 days, depriving Palestinians of food, water, medicine and fuel.
Israel's latest assault targeted areas across the strip, including Khan Younis, Gaza City and Deir el-Balah.
It says it was targeting members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Israeli forces are now threatening to increase their attacks.
Hamas says that five of its civil servants are among the hundreds killed.
It includes the Director of Gaza's internal security service.
Families are mourning their loved ones - while the injured have been taken to overwhelmed hospitals.
Medical facilities are stretched since Israel has prevented the entry of medicine and fuel.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reports from Deir el-Balah, Gaza.

Basem Naim, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, has told Al Jazeera, “We received in the last few days before the brutal aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip a new American proposal from Mr Witkoff [the US envoy] through the mediators.”
Naim added this was a “bridging proposal which will see the exchange of prisoners for a return to the condition’s first phase, a temporary ceasefire, the opening of borders and aid into Gaza and engaging in second-phase negotiations”.
Naim said the parties were close to a breakthrough until Netanyahu decided to launch the latest attacks for his “internal political calculations” to appease the far right.
Contact has nevertheless continued in the last two days through the mediators, Naim said, despite Israel relaunching the war against Gaza.

Israel has launched a new ground operation inside Gaza, which shattered a ceasefire deal with Hamas that had begun in January.
Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, says Hamas “will pay the full price” and that the evacuation of Palestinians from combat zones would start again soon if all hostages aren’t released.
It came as an international United Nations worker was killed, and five others were seriously wounded, in a strike on a UN guesthouse in the Gaza Strip, but it's still not yet clear who's behind this.

The Hamas-run civil defence agency has said at least 55 Palestinians have been killed in overnight Israeli air strikes in Gaza.
Israel resumed its bombing campaign and ground operations in the territory this week, with air strikes killing more than 430 people over two days, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Hamas says the ground operation announced by Israel on Wednesday is a "new and dangerous" violation of the ceasefire deal. Israel resumed attacks on Tuesday as talks to extend the deal failed to progress.
Israel has warned that attacks will intensify in Gaza until Hamas releases the remaining hostages.

Israel has shattered the ceasefire with Hamas this week through extensive air raids that killed hundreds of civilians, including at least 200 children. Israeli ground troops were also deployed, ending the ceasefire that lasted just less than two months.
Then, on Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened the residents of Gaza with “destruction and devastation” if they did not expel Hamas.
So, what lies ahead for Gaza and is it in danger of a complete takeover? This week on UpFront, Redi Tlhabi speaks with Israel’s former deputy foreign minister about Israel’s war in Gaza.

According to the Israeli military, two projectiles fired from northern Gaza have been intercepted. Air raid sirens echoed across the southern city of Ashkelon as explosions were heard in the sky. This development follows Israel’s decision to end the fragile Gaza ceasefire earlier this week, resuming its bombing campaign on the strip, which has so far claimed the lives of at least 600 Palestinians.
Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut joins live from the Jordanian capital, Amman.
She's there because the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority have banned Al Jazeera from reporting inside Israel and the occupied West Bank.

Israel has carried out the most intense air strikes on Lebanon in nearly four months, after several rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel for the first time since a ceasefire came into effect in November.
The Israeli military said it had hit dozens of rocket launchers and a command centre belonging to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia and political group, in southern Lebanon.
Several armed groups operate in Lebanon, including Hezbollah and Palestinian factions, and no-one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Hezbollah, which is the most powerful of them, said it had no involvement, and that it remained committed to the ceasefire.
Lebanon's health ministry said two people, including a child, were killed and eight injured in the strikes.
