Why Architects Must Design with Women in Mind: The Case for More Female Toilets We’ve all seen it, the endless queue for the women’s toilets while the men’s queue (if there is one at all) moves at lightning speed. But this isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a design flaw. As architects, we have the power, and responsibility to change this. The issue isn’t just about space but about equality. Women statistically take longer in the bathroom due to biological, clothing, and caregiving factors (think pregnancy, menstruation, and young children). Yet, many building regulations and design codes still dictate an equal number of male and female toilet cubicles, failing to consider that urinals take up far less space and serve more users per minute. The result? Women wait longer, reinforcing an unnecessary imbalance in everyday life. The solution is simple: provide more female toilet facilities, not just for fairness, but for practicality. Progressive design standards, such as the 2:1 female-to-male ratio in high-traffic public spaces, are already proving successful in reducing queue times. As architects, we pride ourselves on designing for functionality, inclusivity, and user experience. It’s time we rethink outdated toilet ratios and design spaces that serve everyone efficiently. Let’s stop making half the population wait. Video by Jessica Oyelowo who encouraged all architects to share this….well I did 🤣 #Architecture #InclusiveDesign #EqualityInDesign #womeninarchitecture
