What is “confirmation bias,” and how does it fuel misunderstandings about forests, and what it means to care for them? One of the real challenges that those of us that work hard to care for forests and other ecosystems face is people who — rather than asking tough questions about the measures necessary to protect forests, to protect biodiversity — look for anyone or anything that will affirm the discomfort they feel when faced with some of the decisions necessary to do just that, and allow them to do nothing instead. Some of the most powerful tools that we have to effect positive change in forests — like cutting trees — makes those of us who love trees uncomfortable.
